Montezuma Beach Costa Rica Montezuma Costa Rica Beach MontezumaMontezuma was formerly a tiny fishing village at the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. About 20 years ago Montezuma started to get noticed by young travelers because of its tranquil atmosphere and its beautiful location beach.

Montezuma is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in Costa Rica and is known as one of the most alternative and happening places. It's great night-life, spectacular natural beauty, waterfalls, alternative culture, unique restaurants, shops and galleries make Montezuma a must for most itineraries.

Montezuma Beach Costa Rica Montezuma Costa Rica Beach MontezumaAll these special activities is better arrange them in advance, most of them are booked year in advance.

There are various Tour Operators in town, from all of them we only recommend Zuma Tours; this is the only tour company with all the Law requirements, insurance, safety equipments, and responsible and friendly staff.

And on top of all that Zuma Tours is the only company with bilingual guides for every single tour offer.

Since then numbers of small hotels and restaurants have popped up due to the demand and the atmosphere in Montezuma has evolved to more of a party.

The beach at Montezuma is still a nice place to relax and take in sun but as night rolls around people migrate towards the bars and discos and this tiny village comes alive.

Montezuma is also known for its large beautiful waterfall just outside of town. The waterfall is over 50 feet tall and it is a popular place for tourists to jump into the pool that the water falls into.

Montezuma Beach Costa Rica Montezuma Costa Rica Beach MontezumaMontezuma is quite famous in Costa Rica for its lively international party scene and offbeat culture. Just as famous however, are the enchanting surroundings, with marvelous white-sand beaches, secluded rocky coves, and small rivers with picturesque waterfalls.

Stroll down the beaches of Montezuma area and find rocky outcroppings with tide pools where you can marvel at maritime mini eco-systems. Or dip into the natural Jacuzzi pools of a river and enjoy the amphitheatre of the jungle rising up around you.

North of Montezuma, the wide sandy beach of Playa Grande is a favorite spot for beach fans and surfers and nude sunbathing. From there you can walk or arrange a Horseback Riding tours along 7 kilometers of pristine coast to get to the El Chorro waterfall, where fresh water cascades off an escarpment into lava rock swimming pools and then into the ocean.

Come and discover Montezuma, one of the jewels of Costa Rica!

Montezuma Beach Costa Rica Montezuma Costa Rica Beach MontezumaThe Money in Montezuma! (Montezuma - Costa Rica)

NOW THERE IS AN ATV MACHINE IN MONTEZUMA CENTER - The nearest bank is located in Cobano, 7 km from Montezuma. The Banco Nacional is open from Monday to Friday from 8.45 am to 3.45 pm. Please remember to bring your passport all the time, all the transactions with the teller will require a passport; money exchange, travelers checks, wire money, etc. Outside the back you will find and ATM machine. All the shops in Montezuma accept American dollars, and off course colones (the Costa Rican currency), if you do not want the go to the bank you can exchange your currency at Zuma Tours or Aventuras en Montezuma, which are located right next to the Montezuma Supermarket. Note: They charge a small fee for the transaction.

The Montezuma Waterfall (Montezuma - Costa Rica)

A 20 minutes stroll south out of town takes you to a set of three scenic waterfalls. The main attraction here is to climb the second set of falls and jMontezuma Beach Costa Rica Montezuma Costa Rica Beach Montezumaump in. Though countless people do this everyday, be aware that half a dozen people have died attempting this (there’s a warning sing).

The first waterfall has a good swimming hole but it’s shallow and rocky and not suitable for diving. From here, if you continue on the well-marked trail the leads around and up, you will come to a second set of falls. These are the ones offer a good clean leap into the deep water below - and at 10m high, here are also the tallest.

To reach the jumping point, continue to take the trail up the side of the hill untill you reach the diving area. Do not attempt to scale the falls.

The rocks are slippery and this is how most jumpers have met their deaths. From this point, the trail continues up the third and last set of falls. Once again, there are not suitable for jumping. However, there is a rope swing that will drop you right over the deeper part of the swimming hole.

A lot of traveler enjoy this activity, but as with anything of this nature, you undertake it at you own risk.

To get there take the main Montezuma road south out of town and then take the trails to the right after the bridge and past Hotel y Restaurant La Cascada. You’ll see a clearly marked parking area for visitor and the beginning of the trail that leads up.

Montezuma Beach Costa Rica Montezuma Costa Rica Beach MontezumaCuru Wild Refuge

Despite its small size, Curú refuge contains a great variety of fauna and flora, both terrestrial and marine. Despite its small size it boasts 5 different habitats in the refuge including semi-deciduous forest, mangrove swamp and deciduous forest. 232 species of birds have been counted on the refuge and several rare species of mammals including ocelots, pumas and anteaters. A project to reintroduce scarlet macaws and spider monkeys into the area has been very successful. Of vital importance to the marine ecosystem is the fascinating habitat of the mangrove swamps. An immense number of small organisms living in the nutrient-rich mud of these swamps build the basis of the marine food chain. Here are the breeding grounds of many Pacific fish, and crowds of water birds feed and nest in the thickets. All five of Costa Rica's mangrove species are represented in Curu. Curú is a 45 minute drive from Montezuma. ATV is your best option so you can stop by Tambor, located in Bahia Ballena, and explore the many small villages along the way. Taxis are available, as well as the public bus between Montezuma and Paquera which drives right by the entrance.

TRIP REPORT Montezuma COSTA RICA

My husband and I (both in our late 20's) spent a week in the Montezuma area and had an amazing time. We took the bus-ferry-taxi route from Monteverde to Paquera to Puntarenas to Montezuma.

We spent the first 4 nights at a B&B/Language School (see review of Hotel Horizontes de Montezuma)located between Cobano and Montezuma. Then the last 2 nights at the beachfront Ylang-Ylang.

Montezuma Beach Costa Rica Montezuma Costa Rica Beach MontezumaWe used Zuma Tours for a few of our adventures and were very pleased. We did the Isla Tortuga tour (beautiful boat ride, snorkeling, BBQ lunch on the beach, and lots of time to swim and relax). We rented an ATV for a day and spent an afternoon driving up the coast from Montezuma to Mal Pais to these gorgeous beaches. We ended up on Playa Hermosa where we watched the sunset and then headed back to Montezuma for dinner. The following morning we got up early to go to the Cabo Blanco reserve where we hiked the 2 hours to the beach for a swim and saw lots of monkeys and other wildlife along the way. We also used Zuma tours for the 1 hr Montezuma-Jaco boat taxi.

When we stayed at Ylang Ylang we spent a morning and afternoon hiking to the falls 2 hrs up the beach. Apparently 1 of 7 falls in the world that empty straight into the ocean. It was a fun and pretty, but definitely realize it takes the whole 2hrs to do it and can be very hot. We didn't make it to the other waterfalls in Montezuma which I"ve heard are very beautiful as well. I think I'd do those next time instead.

Food is muy importante to us when travelling and so I'll give a run down of the restaurants we tried as well. Have to say we were extremely happy with the selection! A word of warning, we are mostly vegetarians though we occasionally eat some fish or seafood and definitely did so in Montezuma.

Playa de las Artistes- amazing beach location and ocean view. we were there on a 'sushi friday' and it was delicious.

Cocolores- also a beach side restaurant with delicious food. we had the crab gnocchi and cocconut curry vegetables--incredible.

Iguana Cafe- yummy fruit batidos, sandwiches that you can take to go and a perfect corner-side location for people watching

Cafe Organico- name says it all. we only had the homemade ice cream and desserts (slightly less guilt with the organic-ness and all).

Montezuma - Costa Rica

Montezuma has been a favorite for travelers to Costa Rica for many years, due to the picturesque location and local bohemian flavor that makes Montezuma an idyllic destination for tropical relaxation. Montezuma Costa Rica

Planning activities in Montezuma isn’t hard: Just put on some hiking shoes or flip-flops and go for it.

The main activities here are enjoying the beautiful beaches, hiking the waterfalls and hanging out. You won’t find lots of tourist companies all competing for your activity dollar, or a row full of museums just waiting to be wandered through. You won’t find big malls or outlet centers.

You come to Montezuma for recharging and relaxation and it will reward you with beautiful scenery and crashing waves.

For a little bit of a workout, climb the waterfalls. This is one of the most popular activities in Montezuma. There are varying degrees of challenge here, so you can really customize this adventure to your fitness level, or the day’s energy level. Once there, get in the water and enjoy the cool of the fresh water after a long hike.

This area is also considered prime for surfing. You can enjoy the rather large waves here, and there are a few locals who will give you tips. A few shops along the beach can provide what you need for your hang time.

Relax on the beach, and enjoy the surf. The waves here can be big and loud and many visitors find the beach time here to be particularly relaxing and rejuvenating. Be careful in the surf, though, as those big waves can be dangerous.

Montezuma is a long-time favorite for travelers in Costa Rica. The picturesque little town is famed for its bohemian flair and the stunning beauty of the surrounding nature.

Montezuma

The town's center feels like the cozy open-air living room of the community where a continuous mellow party takes place. Just sit down in some bar or eatery and watch the scenery: Rastafarians, hippies, tourists and beauties with eccentric tattoos and piercing catwalk amongst the colorful stands of itinerant artists who are chatting and joking with their neighbors.

At night the most happening place is Chico's Bar right in the center of Montezuma where music, from reggae to salsa, is played until late in the night. But you might also opt for a tranquil cinema night with American movies, a live pianist play, or hang out at a bonfire on the beach.

Gourmets will certainly not complain about good restaurants in Montezuma where vegetarian fare, Mediterranean dishes or cutting-edge concoctions are served with class and style in a romantic atmosphere. Montezuma faces east, towards the Gulf of Nicoya, so that the moon shining over the water may grace beachside dining.
Montezuma Costa Rica

But there is not only night activity in Montezuma. Nestled into a landscape reflecting the tropical paradise, it also draws eco-tourists and beach lovers. High rising cliffs overgrown with lush tropical jungle cradle the village of Montezuma. Small streams flow down from the hills and form scenic waterfalls and natural swimming pools. Groups of capuchin monkeys live in the forests and are easy to spot.

Those who are looking for beach and sun can throw down their towel on Playa Grande, a few steps from the center of Montezuma, or go for a walk along the beach to discover secluded coves and tide pools.

Tour operators in Montezuma offer a range of packages to nearby sights and activities. A day jaunt to the nearby Tortuga Islands includes snorkeling in crystal-clear water and a barbecue at night. One kilometer out of Montezuma you can go on a canopy tour through a verdant river valley topped off by a waterfall, maybe you go scuba diving, sport fishing, kayaking or horseback riding, the choices are endless.

To get to the mainland of Costa Rica you can go by speedboats to Jaco. During the 45 min trip towards the rising sun you may sometimes see dolphins, manta rays or whales.

And the must-see for nature lovers is the nearby Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, located 9 km south of Montezuma.

Hotels in Montezuma offer accommodation for every taste and budget. In high season however, Dec - March the little town fills up and it is advisable to make advanced reservations.

Montezuma Costa Rica

Lying on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Montezuma was a small remote fishing village until the 1980’s when it began to gain a repute of being an ideal budget location for the nearby areas of the Cabo Blanco National Park, the Isla Tortuga and the Curu Wildlife Reserve. Nowadays a popular hangout for young foreign travelers, who enjoy the village’s laidback lifestyle, Montezuma is a carefree place with a mellow vibe.

Among the more popular beach vacation destinations because of its ‘hippie’ lifestyle, Montezuma is a great place to stay at, with its charming beaches, cheap and economical hotels and accommodations, and good restaurants and cuisine. Though this tiny village retains most of its tranquil atmosphere, it is now a huge beach party stop teeming with younger tourists. After the sun sets, Montezuma is the place to be on the peninsula, with plenty of bars and discos found throughout the village. The entire area comes alive with music and dancing and you can find plenty of people relaxing and having a good time.

The beaches along the Montezuma coast are nice and pretty, separated by rocky outcrops and the surfing can get good. However, do be careful as the rip tide here can get quite strong and surfing can be rather difficult. Just on the other side of the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula is Mal Pais and the surf there can get much better. Besides surfing, snorkeling along the reefs, boogie boarding and horseback ridings are a few of the popular activities here. For a more quiet time, visit the secluded beaches of Cocal, Quetzals and Cocalito to just relax and take in the peaceful environs.

When in Montezuma, do visit the beautiful Montezuma waterfalls just outside of town. Over 50 feet high, this waterfall is a popular tourist attraction with many people jumping into the shallow pool below. However, caution is advised, as people have been known to hurt themselves on the rocks underwater, while jumping the falls.

Keep in mind that camping on the beaches in Montezuma is illegal, so try and find a room in the many affordable accommodations here. Do come here as it is definitely worth the visit! To get to Montezuma, catch the Puntarenas-Paquera Ferry and then drive out here or if you are in the area, take the route from San Pablo to Playa Naranjo to Cobano and then on to Montezuma. You can also fly from San Jose to Tambor and take a 30-minute taxi from Tambor.

Montezuma Costa Rica

As it snowed for the first time in a decade in Houston, it was more than pleasant to be treading the warm pacific waters in Montezuma. There are two popular routes for getting to Montezuma, one by plane ($70) to Tambor and the other originates in Punta Arenas via the ferry (1000 Colones) to Paquera. Paquera seems to be a town designed solely for carrying ferry passengers to the Montezuma Mal Pais region. There are plenty of autobuses ($40 pp) and public transport (1000 C) to get you there in about an hour and a half. The bus stops in the center of the action right next to the beach (Café Iguana and Bar Chico’s). Most of the bars, restaurants, and hotels are near this bus station. We made our way across the main beach near the waterfall to a little quieter hotel and then hit the sand. The beach here does not have crystal clear water, but the place is truly great for rest and relaxation with company. The sand is mostly volcanic, but not very muddy. In the super high season the beach would have 20 – 30 people lying out or in the water and it never really disturbed the peaceful sound of the ocean. A thirty-minute walk away from town will lead you to some pretty abandoned stretches of coastline. But don’t go to Montezuma for the solitude, because the place is full of people mostly in there 20-30s who keep the village buzzing. We met quite a few people who we enjoyed sharing travel stories and planning the next adventures with, and Montezuma is a good place to meet fellow travelers. There are some signs of the fishing village roots in Montezuma, but tourism is the main draw. Delightfully, we often heard jazz music in the streets at night with a light saxophone, guitar, drum, it was a real treat and unexpected

Montezuma Costa Rica

Playa Montezuma is known as one of the most alternative and happening places in Costa Rica. It's great nightlife; spectacular natural beauty, waterfalls, alternative culture, unique restaurants, shops and galleries make Montezuma a must for most itineraries.

Sunbathing, surfing, fishing, partying, dancing, eating in fine restaurants, or just relaxing by the beach are some of the many activities of this Costa Rica destination.

Although you can drive from Nicoya, we do not recommend it. Catch the Tambor ferry at Puntarenas. Although you must use the ferry, the Tambor ferry trip alone is well worth the price as it winds through islands in the Gulf of Nicoya. Make sure that you get a ticket for the Tambor ferry and not the Naranjo ferry. They are two separate companies and they will definitely sell you the wrong ticket even if you tell them the Tambor ferry (as I found out). This adds a few hours of exciting driving to the trip.

If you like natural beauty, like to party and enjoy the alternative culture reminiscent of the sixties, you will love Montezuma. It is definitely not for everyone but is one of the hottest tourist areas in Costa Rica. Do book well in advance for holidays and the high season as the entire town does often fill up.

Montezuma Cove and Village night scene In the 1960's a few foreigners discovered Montezuma, and moved here, before there were cars or electricity! Travel was done on horseback. Life was harder, but worth it. Over the decades, Montezuma was "discovered" and hundreds of people from all over the world, especially Italy, Germany, Canada, Argentina, and the United States. It became known as a secret hideaway for movie stars, musicians, and artists and creative people of all types. Before travel to Costa Rica was commonplace, Montezuma was already a world famous destinations for tourists "in the know" about where the best places on earth were.

Howler Monkey in Montezuma. These delightful animals roar like jaguars, frightening many tourists who don't know what they are. But, they are harmless vegetarians. Montezuma also became famous because of Swedish immigrant Nils Olof Wessberg and his Danish wife Karen Morgenson. They founded Cabo Blanco Reserve, and partly because of their efforts, Costa Rica's National Park system was created. Later, rich Costa Rican ranchers in the Osa Peninsula who were fighting the creation of the national parks, bringing international attention to their efforts, murdered Wessberg. Karen died a few years back, and both of these great heroes are buried in the jungle behind Montezuma.

Surfing at Playa Los Cedros, 5 minutes drive from Montezuma town. Meanwhile, the reputation of Montezuma grew as more people discovered the town and told their friends about it. Now it's become one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Costa Rica. It's no wonder, considering there is an incredible variety of activities available, such as: surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, body boarding, fishing, boating, hiking, waterfalls, cliff jumping, bicycling, motorcycle riding, yoga, dancing massage, and much more. Tourists could spend a month in Montezuma and do a different exciting activity every day.

Famous restaurant 'Playa de los Artistas' in Montezuma serves food as an art form The food in Montezuma is first-rate thanks to the many amazing chefs who have moved to the area. Costa Rica's best restaurant, Playa de Los Artistas, serves a different menu at their beachfront location every day. In addition, there's a bakery (Vanilla Cafe), a vegetarian restaurant (The Bakery Cafe), four Italian pizzerias, and another great restaurant called Cocolores.

Only a half hour drive away is Malpais/Santa Teresa, the Pacific Coast beach communities that attract surfers from around the globe. It's an easy drive to visit these gorgeous beaches and watch the sunset. Plus there are another few dozen restaurants to try.

View from above Playa Hermosa, from Santa Teresa to Malpais, all the way to Cabo Blanco Park. It’s no wonder that the Montezuma/Malpais area has seen rapidly escalating real estate prices as many people have decided to try living in paradise or investing here. With 40 million baby-boomers in the U.S. set to retire in the next decade, and 8.9 million Americans with liquid assets of over $1 million dollars to invest, smart investors can see that this area is set to become one of the most expensive beach real estate markets in the world. Many people who have been coming to the area for years now wish they had bought something years back and are buying now before it becomes unaffordable to all but the super-wealthy.

Montezuma Beach Costa Rica

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is a popular beach destination among Costa Rican locals and foreign tourists. This laid back village will remind you of a simpler life style. It is common to see backpackers from around the world and Ticos from San Jose who decided to settle here and sell their crafts. The town itself is a relaxed beach town with all kinds of restaurants, hotels and “sodas” to suit many tastes.Montezuma ’s beauty is well known by famous artists such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bruce Willis and Leonardo di Caprio, some of whom own real estate in the area. Locals and tourists have seen Anthony Keidis and Flea surfing its beaches and partying in town.Montezuma Wildlife Refuge offers more than star watching: although Playa Montezuma , Costa Rica is well known for its surf, its waterfalls, jungle and spectacular sunsets also add value to this Costa Rican beach destination.

In this counterculture town Europeans, Americans and Ticos live harmoniously. There are several hotels that offer a bohemian and artistic ambience with galleries for you to appreciate or buy pieces of art. You will be able to find accommodations for every taste and budget inMontezuma . Costa Rica being a kind and educated country does leave space for entertainment; this town is well known for its party scene and its offbeat culture. Located on the east side of the southern tip of Nicoya Peninsula in the Costa Rican Pacific Coast, it offers access to a series of beautiful beaches such as Cocal, Cocalito, and Quizales making quite an adventure out of a small trip toMontezuma . Wild life refuge is nestled in the area. Lush vegetation borders the beaches and streams cascade down to the ocean. Beautiful waterfalls where fresh water pools form can be seen as you walk into the forest. The most visited fall is located just outside of town and it is 50 feet (15 meters) tall and tourists can take a refreshing dip in the pool formed by the falling water. Rivers and streams cross the beaches of Cocal and Cocalito offering beautiful picture postcard scenes from Costa Rica. PlayaMontezuma: national wildlife refuge for many magical species of flora and fauna.

In order to get to Montezuma beach there are two ways, depending on where you’re coming from. If you are coming from Liberia or the Costa Rican North, you will need to drive south and around the Nicoya Peninsula on gravel roads. From San Jose you’ll need to get to Puntarenas, and then take the ferry to Paquera. Once in Paquera, continue on the road to Cobano and Cabuya. The vegetation in this area is unique, you’ll be able to enjoy the dry tropical forest if you drive, and you’ll see many mangroves, estuaries and islands if you take the ferry which glides between islands in the Nicoya Gulf of Costa Rica. PlayaMontezuma is definitely a must visit place to experience. We can also arrange a domestic air flight from San Jose to Tambor for you or a charter flight from other destinations and there you can meet a private shuttle to take you to yourMontezuma hotel. You will not regret visiting this fun town where you will meet friendly Costa Ricans and travelers from all around the world. The area’s natural beauty, miles of pristine beaches and coves, the rich cultural atmosphere and environmental concerns will have you meditating, renewing yourself, having fun and enjoying the rich wildlife of this Costa Rican beach.

TAXI BOAT FAQ’s:
https://www.montezuma-hotels.com/images/Tours/tortuga_island_1/tortuga-island_09.jpg
I am concerned about safety, do you offer life jackets for all of your passengers?
Actually our boats are the only ones in the area full equipped with life jackets, operation permits and insurances.

Is the boat really \"rocky\"?
All depends on the ocean if the weather conditions are not good, we have to cancel the ocean operation and we help our clients to make the trip by land if necessary.

Would you recommend that passengers take medicine for motion sickness?
Is a speed boat you hardly get sea sick, the movement is back and forward not side by side.

Where do you put the luggage?
The luggage is covered with plastic bags and travel along the passengers.

Can I go and come from the same location the same day?
Only 1 daily departure available from each location for the regular taxi boat, however is you arranged a private boat just for your party you would be able to come back the same day. Other option is spending the night over then come back the following day.

I have a car rental can I leave it the Taxi Boat departure sport then pick up the following day when I return?
We always recommend to leave your car at your car rental office in Jaco, all car rentals in Costa Rica have a office in Jaco. This would be a safe place to leave your rental vehicle.

Taxi Boat Jaco MontezumaWeb Reviews about the Taxi Boat:

Speed Boat Taxi Transfer to Jaco Beach (and other destinations on request):
The trip to Jaco (Herradura) by boat is one hour. Don’t take the long way. Take our boat directly from Montezuma Beach to Jaco. You may also have the chance to see dolphins, whales and other marine wildlife. Ask about other destinations!

Taxi Boat to and from Jaco
The private speed boat, taxi boat or water taxi to Montezuma or Jaco is one of the best way of transportation in this area of Costa Rica. Saving up to 7 hours of hot and uncomfortable trip by land, the taxi boat most accurate way to get to Montezuma or Jaco.

Taxi Boat Jaco Montezuma
We ended up staying two nights here and then leaving via private taxi boat across the awesome Nicoya Gulf, ($30USD ea), for a 1 hour transfer to the to town of Jaco (which would have taken us at least 8 hours of busing / ferries to get to otherwise.

Taxi Boat
So in a few minutes we're off to taxi a “Taxi Boat” up the coast to Montezuma, which is on the peninsula on the north pacific side of Costa Rica. I've wanted to go to this area for a while now! See the image on how we'll cut across the ocean to get there. The boat is an hour instead of the many (treacherous) hours driving up the coast, and probably more scenic :)
